How it works

A blast door is built so that the door leaf, frame, hinges and locks together carry the pressure and impulse of an explosion without failing or letting the load into the room. It is anchored in a wall designed for the same load, and its design is based on a defined threat, such as the charge size and distance. A single-leaf door suits personnel openings.

Typical applications

  • Control rooms and equipment rooms
  • Process buildings and laboratories
  • Entrances of protective shelters

Standards and guidance commonly referenced for this product type

  • ASTM F2247
  • ASTM F2927
  • EN 13123-1
  • EN 13124-1
  • UFC 3-340-02

What does a manufacturer need to size a blast door?

The design blast load (peak pressure and impulse, or the charge and distance), the direction the load acts from, the opening size, the wall type and any extra needs such as fire rating, gas tightness or ballistic resistance. Operating details, such as swing direction and locking, are also needed.

Technical specifications, protection levels and test reports are provided per project. Contact our engineers for details.
