Flame Arrester
Safety equipment for lines carrying flammable gas or vapour. It stops a flame from spreading through the line.

How it works
A flame arrester lets gas or vapour flow through a pipe while stopping a flame from travelling along it. Its core is a heat-absorbing element with narrow gaps, such as crimped metal ribbon, that cools the flame below the temperature needed to keep burning. Arresters are built for deflagration or detonation and for in-line or end-of-line fitting.
Typical applications
- Vapour lines of storage tanks and loading terminals
- Process piping carrying flammable gas or vapour
- Biogas, landfill gas and vent lines
Standards and guidance commonly referenced for this product type
These are general references. Compliance and test reports for a specific product are provided per project.
What is the difference between a deflagration and a detonation flame arrester?
A deflagration arrester stops a flame that moves slower than the speed of sound, and is used where the pipe run between the ignition point and the arrester is short. A detonation arrester is built to withstand the shock wave of a detonation and stop the flame, and is needed where a longer run lets a deflagration accelerate into a detonation. The right type depends on the gas, the pipe length and the pressure.
