Blast & Fire Protection Systems
Emergency Relief Valve
Release pressure in a controlled way during an overpressure condition in a system, preventing damage to the equipment.

How it works
An emergency relief valve opens when pressure in a system rises above its set value and closes again when pressure falls. It releases the excess to a safe place and protects vessels and piping from damage. The set pressure, capacity and the fluid determine the type and size of the valve.
Typical applications
- Vessels and process piping
- Pressure systems that can be overpressured by fire or process upset
- Storage and transfer installations
Standards and guidance commonly referenced for this product type
These are general references. Compliance and test reports for a specific product are provided per project.
How is a relief valve sized?
It is sized for the largest flow it may have to discharge in the worst credible case, such as a blocked outlet or an external fire, at the set pressure and the properties of the fluid. Standards such as ISO 4126 and API 520 give the calculation methods.
