How it works
An ammunition depot is built to store explosives safely. The structure is designed to control what happens in an accidental explosion, for example by directing blast energy in a chosen direction and limiting damage to neighbouring buildings. Standard and mobile versions are available. Quantity, type of ammunition and separation distances decide the design.

Which rules govern the safe storage of ammunition?
National regulations apply first. International guidance includes the NATO AASTP-1 manual on the storage of military ammunition and explosives and the UN International Ammunition Technical Guidelines (IATG). They set rules on quantities, hazard classes and separation distances.
