Blast Engineering

Blast load analysis, explosion risk assessment and the design and manufacture of blast-resistant structures.

ARSDEF is an engineering company specialising in blast-resistant structure solutions. With our technical infrastructure, academically grounded experts and field experience, we offer comprehensive services in blast and fire engineering. To ensure safety against blast effects, we analyse the responses that can occur in structures such as storage tanks, buildings, piping systems and industrial equipment, and we design, engineer and manufacture blast-resistant structures according to intended use and risk scenarios.

What is included

  • Blast-resistant design of foundations and anchorage systems in structures
  • Explosion risk analysis and assessment
  • Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and Process Safety Management (PSM) audits
  • Fitness-for-service (FFS) assessments
  • Blast strengthening projects for existing structures
  • Design and manufacture of blast-resistant doors, windows and glazing systems
  • Engineering and manufacture of blast-resistant modular buildings (BRM – Blast Resistant Modules)

Explosion risk analysis and assessment

ARSDEF engineers carry out comprehensive risk analyses, particularly for storage tank facilities, taking into account all hazards, not only those inside the process but also those outside it. Risk factors such as fire, explosion, toxic gas release, overflow, equipment failure, natural disasters and sabotage are analysed, and all the scenarios a facility may face are evaluated. Risk analyses are also carried out with a holistic approach that takes the “domino effect” into account, meaning the chain effects of accidents, and detailed reports are provided, including potential secondary damage.

Fitness-for-service (FFS) assessments

Fitness-for-service assessments are carried out for structural elements, piping and equipment at levels 1, 2 and 3 in accordance with API 579-1 / ASME FFS-1. Whether damaged or aged systems can safely remain in service is analysed.

  • Pipeline, equipment and structural integrity assessments
  • Fracture mechanics analyses
  • Dropped object and impact analyses
  • Corrosion modelling and damage assessment
  • Vibration analyses

Structural design and consultancy

Design and consultancy are provided for construction specifications, equipment layouts, lifting systems and detailed engineering calculations in line with internationally recognised standards such as AISC, ACI, ASCE, AWS and PCI.

  • Process structures and equipment supports
  • Pipe racks, cable trays, retaining walls and sump basins
  • Static and dynamic equipment foundations
  • Steel connection details and anchorage systems
  • Shallow and deep foundation engineering
